Possible Gen. Chem TA?
Apparently, my chemistry department has come up short the number of graduate students required to fill positions for the myriad freshmeat err, freshmen that take general chemistry each year. As such, the possibility has been mentioned that I (a lowly undergraduate) may have the opportunity to teach a single lab. I have already conveyed my genuine interest in the position, and I hope the slim chance I have turns to reality.
The challenge of leading a small lab of students excites me—as do all things new and different—but there are the cons to consider:
- Wanna-be doctors that cannot get a B
- People destined for general studies
- Safety
- Freshmen that see their first year as high school all over again
Surely these will only be minor bumps in the road, yet the pessimism of other graduate students that teach this particular lab continues to cloud my more naïve view of how the experience will turn out. Ah well, if I am awarded the position, I will be sure to post the good news here.
