SVG Goodness

You gotta love SVG! I won’t pretend to know anything about creating Flash, but I will say that a non-proprietary, XML-based vector drawing language must be better. I spent a little time the other day learning about its syntax from LearnSVG.com and applied my new knowledge to the creation of a mail statistics page that contains SVG-based dynamic graphs about how much spam I receive versus real mail. That information has been available on the right-hand column of this site, but now I present all that data in graphical form.

That page also contains information about how I collect these statistics from the Mac OS X application Mail.app mail client. For the moment, because of the dependence on AppleScript, this whole set of scripts is limited to use on a Mac using Mail.app as the mail client. I envision creating scripts to collect the same data from other clients, but we’ll see.

I am still working out a few kinks in the graphing code which I created myself. Once that is done, I plan to release the whole project for mass consumption. I’ll let you know when it’s ready for download, so check back soon.
