Martha Stewart goes to jail

In a stunning string of bad luck, Martha Stewart has been sentenced to five months in jail. There are so many reasons why this is wrong, I do not even know where to begin:

  • Martha Stewart was never found guilt of insider trading because they could not prove it to a reasonable certainty
  • Given the above, she was found guilty of obstruction of justice for lying
  • If people start going to jail for lying, the prison system will collapse under its own weight
  • An example was made of her because of her elevated, stardom status
  • Lawyers think they can shape society by showing this “win” for the working class and that no one is above the law: bullshit

How can someone go to jail for five months just by lying?!? The prosecution wanted a sacrificial lamb, and Martha was it. So much for fairness under the law: if an example needs to be made, screw whether the facts of the case fly in the face of guilt: you will be found guilty anyway. Due process? Forget it. I tell you this is not a good precedent to set.

People often say this is a good thing, that Martha had it coming. Umm, what the bloody hell for? She may not be the nicest person in the world, but what the hell did she ever do to you, other than provide house moms with new crafty ways to make cool shit for their kids and friends at house parties? I try to explain calmly the facts of the case, and yet people still deride her. Are people so insensitive to the laws our country has. To convict for a crime that was not proven to have happened (again, she was only guilty of obstruction of justice) is insane. People need to see past this whole “We need to make an example out of Martha for the sake of the working class” crap.

No one should be above the law, but to make Martha the sacrificial lamb in the wake of the huge accounting scandals is ludicrous. How dare people!
