Spam report

Upon checking my personal spam report, I noticed a marked decline in the number of spam received in the last week. Although I am highly skeptical that this is related to the recent blocking of SMTP port 25 by Comcast, Ars is reporting that this move to single out users spewing out email by the ton has apparently reduced overall spam on the internet by about 35%! That’s huge.

You can check out how much spam versus total email I receive on a daily basis in the sidebar near the bottom. It currently displays the last five days worth of mail statistics and displays the number of spam in a color dependent on the percentage of total email that is spam for that day. On my iBook, I have a nice local page that uses PHP/SWF Charts to create a pretty graphical representation of the data. Here’s a peek at my recent UCE (in blue) and normal email (in red):

As to my skepticism, we will see if my level of spam remains low in the long term. I would love to be proven wrong.
